Elisha’s House will be opening soon!
As you may have heard at church or seen in the Galax Gazette, Cornerstone is partnering with several other churches and agencies to open a warming shelter for the homeless. This is different from a traditional homeless shelter, because it will only open on nights when the temperatures drops to 29 or below. We will schedule a week in advance based on the forecast.
So the way this is planned, different churches, organizations, or businesses will adopt the shelter each week to provide snacks and volunteers. So if enough churches sign up, our Cornerstone volunteers will probably only be serving a week once every month or two, and only on nights when the temperature is 29 or below. Here’s how you can get involved.
We have an open house on Tuesday, November 15th from 4 to 8pm at Center 2:42. Come by anytime to learn more about our setup, and to ask any questions you may have.
We weren’t planning on opening until November 21st, but the forecast is calling for possible cold weather before then, so we are considering opening after the open house. If we do, those first few days (possibly the 17th, 18th, 19th, and 20th) will need to be handled by Cornerstone. We have two other churches that are handling the next two weeks after that. That means we need to move fast to get volunteers in place!!
In order to get started, we are asking all volunteers (from all churches and organizations) to watch a short 10 minute training video and fill out our volunteer registration form. You can find the form at https://forms.gle/yx1a5YKFbo85wfdW6
We will be communicating with everyone who signs up. We will especially need help with overnight volunteers. If two people sign up, than you would each serve a 4 hour shift, with the other person sleeping in the office in Center 2:42.
Let us know if you have any questions. We’ll be sending out more information and officially organizing as a ministry team here at Cornerstone. Everything is moving quickly, so hold on! God is at work.
